PPE worn properly 99% of the time — and the 1% is the one that hurts.

The operator knows which PPE their zone requires. The supervisor knows it. The safety manager knows it. But the plant is big, there are several entry points and the day is busy:

  1. The one-second lapse — the operator coming back from a coffee break without putting the glasses back on, the new hire who has not yet absorbed the rules of each zone, the maintenance technician who walks onto the line with their own PPE but is missing the extra item that area requires.
  2. A different rule in every zone — helmet here, glasses there, cut-resistant gloves in machining, mask in food packaging. The sign is on the wall, but the sign does not move.
  3. The ISO 45001 audit that comes round once a year — and between one audit and the next, compliance is verified by the shift manager's eye.

How does PPE detection with computer vision work?

iLEAN Edge is a terminal running convolutional neural networks (CNN), installed at the entry points to hazard zones (access to a line, furnace entrance, welding bay). It looks at the operator at the moment of entry — not before, not after — and verifies that the PPE required in that zone is being worn: helmet, safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, safety footwear, mask, whatever applies. If something is missing, it fires a local signal (red light, voice in the earpiece, access traffic light) before the person crosses. Isn't this policing the workers?
