Fine-tuning know-how is the hardest asset to replace in a PET plant and the worst documented. It is what separates a facility that starts up in twenty minutes from one that takes two hours, and it lives in three or four heads. The shift lead is the person who produces most of that knowledge and who can least record it. He walks seven hours a day, carries gloves or a tool in his hand and wears ear defenders. Any system that requires typing is ruled out from the start, which is why the pocket notebook is still the standard tool. In a group with several plants and new openings, this stops being a plant problem and becomes an expansion problem: what is not written down cannot be copied into a new facility, and every opening pays the full learning curve again.
