Frequently asked questions

What people ask about digitizing the shop traveler

Does the paper have to go?

No, and that is the point. The traveler still prints when the job is released and still travels with the part, which is how the shop knows how to work. Removing the paper in one go is what makes these projects get abandoned: you replace the medium that works with a screen that gets in the way.

Does it read handwriting?

It reads the structured fields reliably and free notes as associated text. If a note is unreadable it gets flagged in the validation rather than invented. The photo is kept, so the original source is always there to check.

What about subcontracted operations?

They are recorded the same way, with a photo of the traveler on dispatch and on return. In this sub-sector surface treatment is usually external and it is where most days disappear unnoticed, so having the dispatch and the return time-stamped changes the conversation about why a project is late.

Does it help compare quoted with real hours?

That is the main reason to do it. Today that comparison arrives at close, when the job has already eaten the margin. With capture per operation the deviation shows while the project is still on the table and something can still be decided.

Does the shop need network coverage?

Not continuously. If the machine area has poor coverage, the photo queues and uploads when there is signal. That is one reason to do it by photo rather than with a connected app.
