Digital Product Passport — a living dossier per SKU, not a label.
The DPP required by the ESPR Regulation is not filled in: it is captured. iLEAN Connect collects raw material origin, energy consumed, batch and supplier certificates straight from the plant's nervous system; an agent consolidates the passport per SKU. The person signs — the agent works 24/7.
“They ask me for the DPP per SKU and my data lives in six different places.”
The DPP is not a compliance label — it is a digital dossier that travels with every unit or batch, and that any B2B buyer, distributor or regulator can read via QR/NFC. Inside it there must be: raw material origin and traceability, carbon footprint, durability, reparability, recycled content, substances of concern and end-of-life recyclability.
The sustainability manager knows it — and also knows the information is already in the plant, but it lives in islands:
- Raw material origin sits in supplier PDF certificates that arrive by email and get filed in a network folder.
- Energy consumed per batch sits in an electricity meter that only delivers the monthly total; nobody has ever broken it down to kWh per SKU.
- Recycled content is declared by the supplier in a spreadsheet updated every quarter, not per batch.
- Substances of concern depend on the PLM's BOM, but additives added on the shop floor are not always updated there.
- Recyclability is a design figure that lives in the R&D department.
When the OEM asks for the DPP, somebody — usually the sustainability manager — spends days gluing pieces together by hand. It works the first time. By the tenth, it stops working.
iLEAN does not add a seventh system — it seals the cracks between the six you already have.
The DPP is not solved with one more ERP module. It is solved when product information stops living in islands and becomes data that updates itself. iLEAN acts as the filler that covers what your systems left exposed — without asking you to change ERP, PLM, MES or the production line.
Connect captures the data wherever it is — the supplier certificate in PDF, the kWh from the meter, the R&D manager's spreadsheet. The agent consolidates the DPP per SKU. The person signs. The dossier comes out compliant with the sector's delegated act.
The three iLEAN pieces applied to the Digital Product Passport:
- Connect — captures the information that today arrives through non-integrated channels: the supplier's origin certificate as a PDF by email, the recycled raw material batch with its traceability sent by message, the reading of the line's electricity meter during the batch, the forgotten spreadsheet of the R&D manager with the exact composition of every SKU. It all comes in at second zero, with nobody forwarding anything.
- Tracer — anchors the data to the SKU, the batch and the unit. Granularity adjustable to the sector's delegated act (per unit for batteries, per SKU for textiles, per model for electronics). The physical identifier (QR, NFC, data matrix) is linked to the digital dossier.
- Agent — cross-checks raw material, energy, composition, recycled content and certificates; consolidates the DPP in the format required by your sector's delegated act; leaves it ready for signature. If a figure is missing, the agent flags it to the sustainability manager through whichever channel they use, instead of waiting for someone to discover it two months later.
And all of it under the three security rings: capture happens in ring 3 (maximum power), prior validation is done by a pool of agents in ring 2, and the dossier ready for signature is deposited in ring 1, where the responsible person reviews and signs it. Never the other way round.
DPP by hand vs. DPP consolidated with iLEAN
| Aspect | DPP by hand (spreadsheet + PDFs) | With iLEAN Connect + Tracer + Agent |
|---|---|---|
| Raw material origin | Supplier PDF filed in a network folder | Captured at second zero, anchored to the batch |
| Energy per SKU | Monthly meter total, prorated by eye | Real kWh per batch, read by Connect |
| Recycled content | Quarterly declaration in a spreadsheet | Traced to the incoming raw material batch |
| Granularity | Per generic SKU | Per unit / batch / SKU, as the sector act requires |
| Updating | Manual, ad-hoc, whenever the OEM asks | Continuous, the agent keeps it alive |
| Dossier for auditor / OEM | Gluing pieces together for days | Generated by the agent, ready in minutes |
Impact estimate for your plant — to be validated with your numbers.
The block below is an estimate to be validated with the specific data of your plant. We put it forward so the committee has an order of magnitude; we refine it during the diagnostic.
- Mid-sized plant with 50-500 active SKUs, an existing ERP/PLM, supplier certificates that today arrive by email/PDF.
- Connect + DPP Agent pilot on one product family: capture of origin + energy per batch + composition + recyclability. First value expected within a few weeks.
- Indicative payback between 4 and 9 months, depending on the number of SKUs for which a DPP is built by hand today and the opportunity cost of not delivering the data on time to an OEM that is already asking for it.
- Reduction in sustainability hours spent assembling dossiers manually: ≥ 30 %, with room for more as the capture covers more SKUs.
- The hard lever is not losing a contract with a B2B buyer that has started auditing its suppliers' DPPs — and most of them are already heading that way.
And the sustainability manager's reasonable doubt
“What if the AI makes up a DPP figure?” — hallucination is a problem of free generation, not of anchored tasks. In tasks where the AI merely recontextualises a figure from one system into another (reading the supplier certificate, extracting the composition, anchoring it to the SKU), the best models brought the error below 1.5 % [1]. And even then, the dossier does not go out on its own: the agent prepares it, the responsible person reviews and signs it. The three rings are there for exactly this.

What people ask about the Digital Product Passport with AI
What exactly is the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and which products does it cover?
The Digital Product Passport is the centrepiece of the EU ESPR Regulation (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation). It is a digital dossier per unit or batch, accessible through an identifier (QR, NFC, data matrix) that travels with the product and gathers: raw material origin, composition, carbon footprint, durability, reparability, recycled content, substances of concern and end-of-life recyclability. Each sector has delegated acts detailing every field — it starts with batteries, then textiles, electronics, construction, furniture, tyres and chemicals.
What happens if the DPP data is not consistent with the reality of the plant?
The same thing that happens with any regulatory declaration that does not hold up: losing the right to place the product on the EU market, a penalty for the manufacturer, and brand damage when the B2B buyer (already auditing its suppliers' DPPs) spots the inconsistency. That is why DPP data is not drafted — it is captured from the plant's nervous system. iLEAN Connect picks up the information wherever it lives (ERP, MES, the quality manager's spreadsheet, the supplier's PDF certificates), an agent consolidates it per SKU, and the dossier stays anchored to traceable evidence rather than to a hand-written declaration.
How does iLEAN fit with my ERP or PLM if I already manage part of the composition there?
iLEAN does not replace the ERP/PLM — it sits on top and fills in what those systems left uncovered. Your PLM manages the BOM and versioning; your ERP manages batches and purchasing. iLEAN Connect captures what is missing for the DPP and lives outside those systems (real energy consumption per SKU, supplier certificates in PDF, line parameters during the batch, email and messaging exchanges with the recycled raw material supplier). An agent cross-checks everything and builds the dossier in the format required by your sector's delegated act.
What level of granularity does it allow — per unit, per batch, per SKU?
All three. For batteries the delegated act requires a DPP per unit (every battery has its own passport). For textiles the regulation allows per SKU plus production run. For electronics it is being defined per model plus configuration variants. iLEAN adjusts the granularity to whatever the sector act requires, without changing the capture — the data stays the same, what changes is the aggregator: by serial number, by batch, by SKU. The sustainability manager decides; the agent prepares it.
Who signs the DPP — the agent or a person?
A person, always. iLEAN works on the three-ring security architecture: capture and consolidation happen in ring 3 (maximum power); prior validation is done by a pool of agents in ring 2; and the dossier ready for signature is deposited in ring 1, where the responsible person reviews and signs it. The agent works 24/7 and the person signs — never the other way round. That is what separates an IRIS system from substitutive AI.
