The laser marker, stitched to the ERP with no manual typing
The laser marker that engraves lot and part number on every part is usually modern and API-capable, but isolated from the ERP: lot changes get typed by hand on its panel. With iLEAN, the marker is stitched bidirectionally to the ERP.
The last step before shipping still depends on someone's fingers.
the marker is the last physical step before the part leaves for shipping. One mistyped digit turns a whole lot into a hard-to-trace nonconformity, yet manual typing remains the standard method.
- The laser marker that engraves lot and part number on every shaft or piston is usually modern and has an API nobody has ever used. Nobody asked for it to be connected because it has always worked by hand.
- So on every lot change, somebody types the new values on its panel, often in a hurry because the parts washer and the packing station are waiting. On short lots, that typing happens several times per shift.
- One wrong digit turns a whole lot into a nonconformity that is hard to trace back, because the mark itself is the traceability. A wrong mark on a correct part is still a nonconformity for the OEM.
- And it happens at the last physical step, after every other control — first-off, SPC, visual inspection — has already passed. So nothing downstream is designed to catch it.
Connect stitches ERP and laser marker together — two modern systems, finally talking.
Connect stitches two modern systems via API. When the ERP flags a work-order start, it automatically publishes part number, lot and heat to the marker; a lot change becomes one ERP tap, not manual marker typing.
There is nothing to buy: both systems already have interfaces. Connect makes the ERP the only place a lot is defined, and the marker simply engraves what it receives. It is the fastest payback in the matrix precisely because nothing new has to be installed. Operators stop being the weakest link at the very end of the process.
The marker on its own versus the marker fed by the ERP
| Aspect | Today | With iLEAN Connect |
|---|---|---|
| Lot change at the marker | Typed at its panel | One tap in the ERP |
| Values engraved | What was typed | Part number, lot and heat from the order |
| Human-origin marking errors | Occasional | Zero |
| Mark versus order | Never compared | Confirmed back to the ERP |
| Mismarking nonconformity risk | Latent on every lot | Drastically reduced |
| New hardware | — | None |
occasional typing errors (some tied to nonconformities) → zero human-origin marking errors.
Impact estimate — to be validated with your numbers.
The block below is an estimate to be validated against your plant's actual data. We put it forward so the committee has an order of magnitude; we refine it during the assessment.
- Estimated payback 3-6 months, the fastest in the matrix. Nothing new is installed, which is why the range is short.
- Drastic reduction in the risk of a mismarking nonconformity, the kind that is hardest to contain because the wrong mark looks right.
- Human-origin marking errors go from occasional to zero. Every engraved lot matches its order, and the check is recorded.
- And a lot change becomes one ERP action instead of a typing job at the end of the line. On short lots, that saves several typing jobs per shift.
fast payback, 3-6 months, drastic reduction in mismarking nonconformity risk. *Estimate to be validated*.
And the fair question from the production manager
“What if the ERP sends the wrong lot to the laser?” — the order is the single source, so any error is visible in one place instead of spread across panels. Matching the engraved fields to the order is an anchored check, where the best models drop below 1.5% error [1], and the operator confirms the first marked part of each lot before the run continues.

What people ask about linking the laser marker to the ERP
Our marker has an API we never used — is that enough?
In most cases, yes. Connect uses the interfaces both systems already expose; no extra middleware is purchased and the marker's own software is not modified. The integration is reversible: the marker can still be run by hand if the link is ever disconnected.
Which fields travel to the marker?
Part number, lot and heat by default, plus any field your OEM requires in the mark, such as date code, plant code or a data matrix. The mark content per part number is agreed once with quality and then applied automatically.
Can the operator still adjust the mark by hand?
Layout, depth and power stay at the marker, as today. The traceability fields are locked to what the ERP sends, which is the whole point. Changes to the mark recipe stay under the control of whoever owns it today.
How do we know the marker engraved what was sent?
The marker returns what it executed and Connect compares it with the order. A mismatch stops the lot before the parts reach packing. That return check is what turns the mark into evidence instead of an assumption.
How long does it take to set up?
It is usually the quickest case to deploy, because both ends are already modern and documented. The longest step tends to be agreeing the mark content with quality. Most plants have it running on one line first and then extend it to the rest.
