- The MES/MRP truth — the signed-off plan, the released orders, the schedule leveled at the end of the day. Stable, auditable, reliable.
- The truth of the plant today — line 3 has been down for 90 minutes because of a breakdown only the shift supervisor knows about; the sales rep passed along a rush order by email at 8:00; a critical supplier gave notice in a message that the truck leaves tomorrow instead of today. All that information exists — but it isn't in the MES at second zero.
The planner ends up acting as human glue between the two truths: half the day spent reading email, calling the floor, checking a spreadsheet, adjusting orders by hand in the MES. And they do it well — but only at human speed. The day they go on holiday, the plant runs on the old plan and starts losing orders, lead time and raw material.
The problem isn't that the MES is bad. It's that the MES was never designed to live with a shifting reality in real time — it was designed to impose the plan. And between the plan and reality there is a gap that until recently could only be filled with human hours.

The underlying fact — the cost of integration hit the floor
"I'm not integrating that old machine because it costs more than it's worth" — that excuse has expired. And the CAIO's doubt — does the AI invent orders?
"What if the agent pushes a wrong order into the MES because of a hallucination?" — hallucination is a problem of free generation, not of anchored tasks. In tasks where the AI simply recontextualizes data between systems (read the email, extract the order, compare it against capacity), the best models brought the error rate below 1.5% [1]. And the agent never writes directly into the critical OT side of the MES: it proposes, the planner signs off, and the write passes through ring 2 validation. The three rings exist precisely for this.

Does iLEAN replace the MES?
No. iLEAN sits on top of the MES (and of the ERP/MRP) and fills the dead zones no MES covers well: real capacity measured on the line, unplanned downtime at second zero, critical raw material with a supplier change, urgent demand arriving by email. The MES remains the operational source of truth; iLEAN is the filler that keeps it anchored to reality. How does it handle rush orders?
The rush order comes in through some channel (email, a phone call, a message from the sales rep) and almost never through the MES. iLEAN Connect captures it at second zero — with nobody forwarding anything or calling a meeting — the agent recalculates the multi-product plan weighing changeover cost, impact on other orders and available capacity, and proposes the adjustment to the planner. The person validates and signs off. The MES receives the updated order and the plant runs on a live plan, not on Monday's plan.
Does it work with SAP, Oracle or other large ERPs?
Yes. iLEAN does not compete with large ERPs or vertical ERPs — it positions itself as an AI layer on top. Integration is what well-applied LLMs do best: read in one format, recontextualize into another, write wherever needed. And since the AI Act and NIS2 we do it respecting the three-ring architecture: what is critical stays inside the OT network with human validation, what is non-critical runs in the outer ring at full speed. What if I have a legacy MES or a vertical nobody updates?
