A uniform leather batch requires cross-checking three realities, each living on its own island:

  1. The bath pH curve — it follows the tanning phases (pickling, tanning proper, basification, fixation). Each phase demands a pH and a duration; the tanning agent (chrome, vegetable or synthetic) modifies them.
  2. The batch recipe — which hide (bovine, ovine, caprine, softness/thickness), which final SKU, which colour and which shade. It usually sits on a lab sheet, in an old vertical MES or in the production manager's notebook.
  3. The master tanner's judgement — the hundred small decisions per shift that appear in no manual: raise the acid here, turn more slowly there, wait before basifying. The largest island, the one that is in no system. It lives in people and leaves with them.

The morning operator has thirty years of experience. The afternoon operator has two. Same SKU, same drum, same «official» recipe — and the batch comes out different. The customer's inspection line catches it and either returns the order or downgrades it to quality B. The veteran's knowledge is the plant's most valuable asset and its worst protected one.
