A variable frequency drive leaving the factory carries three pieces of data that always have to be matched — and that, on most lines, each live on their own island:
- Serial number and model — printed on the enclosure label. Scanned with a gun if the code is legible; transcribed by hand if it is not.
- Firmware version loaded — decided by the operator at the end of the process. It usually gets noted on a screen, or stays in the programmer's log. If the programmer does not export, it is lost.
- Customer order and test record — living in the ERP, in a MES or in a spreadsheet of open orders. The operator matches drive to order by hand, at the worst possible moment (end of shift, rushing to pack).
When everything goes well, the classic system works. The day a customer calls because a drive is giving trouble, the pattern repeats: nobody knows which firmware that specific serial number shipped with, nor whether anything odd showed up in its test, nor exactly which order it belonged to. The RMA is argued in the dark, the third-party claim is poorly defended, and the support engineer spends a week rebuilding a piece of data that should have been tied together at second zero.
