ERP-connected encoders for cured meat packs

Application example · Impact to validate

The encoder that prints batch and expiry on every pack is modern and has an API, but sits isolated from the ERP. With iLEAN it's stitched together: batch, curing date and allergens travel automatically.

Send the approved packaging batch to the encoder — IRIS Connect
The problem

Send the approved packaging batch to the encoder

Batch changes are typed by hand into the encoder panel; a wrong keystroke contaminates part of the run with the wrong batch.

  • Distinguish the planned order from the order actually running. During a reference change, previous-batch material may remain on the conveyor, so a new print configuration requires a coordinated change point. Review the fields each encoder prints and the relationship between those values and the approved packaging recipe before defining the integration messages.
How it fits the IRIS system

Preparing this use case at the plant

Connect stitches the ERP and encoder together via API. When the ERP marks the active packaging batch, it automatically publishes batch, date and allergens.

Confirm equipment model, available protocol, permissions and acknowledgment behavior. Send a test configuration, read the response and inspect the first print. Record which version the encoder received and when. A communication failure leaves the order awaiting verification; the ERP saying that a message was sent is not sufficient evidence that the printing device applied it.

Measure results before scaling

The block below is an estimate to be validated against your plant's actual data. We put it forward so the committee has an order of magnitude; we refine it during the assessment.

Fast payback, 3-6 months, with a drastic reduction in mislabeling recall risk. Estimate to be validated.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about erp-connected encoders for cured meat packs

Does connecting the API guarantee correct physical marking?

The API carries the configuration. Actual print quality may depend on ink, position, legibility and package movement. This case can therefore be paired with inspection of the printed result. Removing manual re-entry reduces one error source, while output inspection checks what the package actually received under operating conditions.

Who determines expiry and allergen information?

Values must come from plant-approved sources for the reference being packed. Integration transports authorized data and versions; it does not invent dates or alter recipes. Quality and production define batch-change checks, correction approval and how to identify the product produced between two configurations. Those decisions are part of the operating workflow, not an assumption made by the connector.
