Classic andon never leaves the shop floor — and the decision gets taken without anyone signing anything.

In a 24/7 plant where personal phones never reach the line, classic andon is a light column on the wall and a two-way radio on the belt. It works — but it leaves three gaps that show up the day the auditor or the operations director asks.

  1. The alert never leaves the shop floor. The shift lead sees it, handles it, and the data stays in their head. If it is not handed over at shift change, it is lost.
  2. There is no traceability. What time did the red light come on, who handled it, what did they decide? It gets reconstructed by hand days later.
  3. Escalation is slow. If the shift lead needs a decision from the plant manager, they call over radio or on a landline. The manager is never in the right place at the right time.

The excuse for not digitising andon was a reasonable one: "if you can't bring a phone in, an app of what, exactly?". But the app is not what defines Connect — the app is one of its doors.
