The problem

Half the panel sends EDIFACT. The other half emails a spreadsheet to Pilar.

A tier-1 automotive plant coordinates dozens of suppliers. The mixed reality is the norm:

  1. Large suppliers — they send EDIFACT DELFOR (forecast) and DELJIT (call-off) through the EDI broker. They land in the MES clean. Zero friction.
  2. Mid-sized and small tier-2 suppliers — they send the weekly forecast as a spreadsheet attached to an email, sometimes with a courtesy PDF. They change headers from one month to the next, rename tabs, use a different thousands separator.
  3. Pilar (or whoever holds that role) opens the email, copies and pastes cells, translates them into the MES internal reference and uploads them manually. When she gets it wrong or runs late, the planner works off an old forecast and the line's rhythm breaks.

It is not clumsiness on Pilar's part or the supplier's: asking a tier-2 workshop to stand up an EDI broker so it can send one spreadsheet a week is disproportionate. Integration cost more than it was worth. That is what changed: AI dropped the cost of integration through the floor.

The emailed-forecast problem is not new; what is new is the solution.   • Normalization agent. It knows the EDIFACT DELFOR/DELJIT schema, the MES material master and each supplier's habits (which headers they tend to use, which date format). It issues the EDI message and drops it through the same channel as any other EDI.
  • Ring 2 (validation). If the quantity falls outside the historical range, if a new reference appears, if the destination plant changes — the data does not enter on its own: it goes through the validation chamber and the planner signs. If it fits the pattern, it enters under auto-approval with a confidence threshold. Configurable per supplier.
  • Two-way flow. Connect drafts the reply to the supplier through the same channel (acknowledgement, adjustment, clarifying question). The planner signs it; the supplier gets an answer as if they were talking to a person.

Why does a tier-2 supplier still send the forecast as an emailed spreadsheet instead of EDI?

Because setting up EDIFACT EDI costs money and time, and many tier-2 suppliers are family-run workshops or small firms with a modest ERP. Asking them to stand up an EDI broker just to send a weekly forecast is about as proportionate as forcing them to change their business.
