The section lead walks the whole plant all shift long — and the key information arrives late.

In a food products plant, the section lead carries the entire floor in his head and on his feet. On a normal shift he watches three simultaneous forming-and-baking lines, plus packing, plus the rotary oven they share. He easily walks 30 km a day, and when line 3 does something odd, he is already opening the forming machine on line 1.

  1. By the time the information reaches him, 20 minutes have gone by. The operator phones him, tracks him down over the radio, or flips the red flag on the panel — and by then the oven batch is already scrap or the piece is coming out off-weight.
  2. The critical knowledge lives only in his head. What to do when the flour changes batch and the dough tears, how much to raise the oven temperature when humidity is high, when to stop forming machine 2 because it "beeps funny". That knowledge is in no system. The day he retires or goes on leave, it leaves with him.
