The only proof the equipment is fit to start lives in a binder.

Preservation and preventive rounds are long routes across a large site, with stops at dozens of pieces of equipment. At each stop, things get written down that are, literally, the only evidence that the equipment is fit for service: shaft rotation, nitrogen blanketing pressure, oil level and condition, motor space heater, coating condition. That sheet ends up in a tray, then in a binder, then in an archive nobody ever opens again. And here is the real cost, which is not the writing time: nobody is going to read three hundred sheets to discover that an oil level has been drifting down for six weeks. The trend is written down, in the plant, right now. Nobody can see it. The aggravating factor appears in any asset that spends a long period in preservation awaiting start-up: that paper history is the documentary proof that the equipment is fit to start. «What if it misreads a pressure or an oil level on a handwritten sheet?» — reading fields from a document whose structure is known is an anchored task, where the best models drop below 1.5% error [1]. And there is a second net, built in: the summary lands on the technician's tablet at the equipment and they confirm or correct before anything enters central memory. A value outside the physical range of that tag — a blanketing pressure the regulator cannot deliver — is flagged, not accepted, and every correction teaches the system how this plant writes its sheets.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask about paperless preservation rounds

Do we have to redesign the round sheet?

No. The model is anchored to the sheet you already use, in the format it has today, with its tags, its measurement points and its tick boxes. Redesigning it would be the fastest way to lose the field's cooperation, and it is not needed.

Does it read handwriting, including remarks in the margin?

Yes, and the remarks are often the most valuable part: "slight seepage at the seal" is exactly what never makes it into a system today. A low-confidence value is flagged for the technician to confirm, so a doubtful digit never becomes a data point.

Does it work where there is no coverage?

The photo is taken offline and uploaded when the tablet or phone regains connection, which on a large site can be back at the workshop. The round itself never depends on the network, and the timestamp is the moment of the photo, not of the upload.

Can we load the historical archive?

Yes, and it is usually worth it: the binders from the preservation period become the condition baseline the start-up team will ask about. It is a batch job on the existing binders, not a new habit for anyone in the field.

Do we need the CMMS connected from day one?

No. The case works from the first route against iLEAN's central memory, where the readings are already queryable by tag. Pushing them into the CMMS as measurement documents is connected afterwards, once there is demonstrated value on a real route.
